Weekly Box Office Report: War 2 Falters,Coolie Struggles, While Mahavatar Narsimha Creates History
The Independence Day week witnessed one of the biggest box office clashes in recent memory. Three films with completely different identities, Hrithik Roshan & Jr. NTR War 2, Rajinikanth Coolie – The Powerhouse and the animated blockbuster Mahavatar Narsimha went head-to-head.
Now that the first full week is over, the numbers have drawn a clear picture: one film has collapsed, one has divided the country and one has emerged as the true winner.
War 2: A Big Film With Bigger Disappointments
War 2, from YRF’s celebrated Spy Universe, had the biggest expectations. The combination of Hrithik Roshan and the franchise brand ensured a thunderous start.Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR’s mega action spectacle War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, opened with sky-high expectations. However, after an extended 8-day first week, the film has earned only ₹147 crore Nett. in India, a figure that falls well short of its potential.
Day-wise collections- Hindi (All India Nett.):
Week 1 Hindi Total: ₹147 crore Nett.
The film was highly frontloaded, peaking on Friday but collapsing soon after. The 75% Monday fall shook confidence and weekday numbers couldn’t recover. Multiple shows cancellations, low mass audience interest and negative word of mouth sealed its fate.
Projected Lifetime Business: ₹165-170 crore (Hindi), under ₹250 crore all languages.
Verdict: Despite the Good Independence Day weekend, War 2 has turned into one of YRF’s most disappointing outings.
Coolie: Fire in the South, Smoke in the North
Rajinikanth Coolie was always going to be massive in South India, thanks to the star power of Thalaivar and Lokesh Kanagaraj direction. The film didn’t just open big; it became a festival across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
Day-wise collections (All India Nett.):
Week 1 Total: ₹261 crore Gross (India)
Hindi Contribution: ₹24.25 crore nett
In South India, Coolie is a monster hit. In Hindi, However, the film hasn’t connected. Despite Superstar Rajinikanth stature, it struggled after the extended weekend with weekday numbers also dropped sharply. While it’s a solid pan-India performer in Tamil markets, the Hindi version desperately needs a second-weekend miracle to avoid being tagged a disappointment
The Hindi lifetime may wrap around ₹30–35 crore nett, which is disappointing.
Projected Lifetime Business: ₹350+ crore Gross (India), but only ₹30–35 crore nett in Hindi.
Verdict: Coolie is a tale of two halves- A roaring success in the South, an underperformer in Hindi.
Mahavatar Narsimha: The Box Office Miracle
If there is one film that has shaken the industry, it is Mahavatar Narsimha. In an age dominated by star-driven spectacles, this animated epic has emerged as the audience’s favorite, running with extraordinary consistency across all four weeks.
Week-wise collections in Nett.(Hindi):
Total (27 Days Hindi): ₹166.5 crore nett
All India Total: ₹215+ crore nett
What’s remarkable is not just the total, but the hold. Even in Week 4, its weekday numbers are stronger than Coolie Week 1 in Hindi. Families and Kids continue to flock to cinemas and since many screens had already shifted to Narsimha on Monday after War 2’s collapse, its run only grew stronger. Globally, the film has already sailed past ₹250 crore gross and is well on track for a ₹300 crore+ finish. What even more remarkable is that this is an animated film with no big stars, yet it has become one of 2025’s most profitable ventures
Projected Lifetime Business: ₹180–190 crore Hindi, ₹225+ crore All India.
Verdict: Mahavatar Narsimha is not just a hit, it’s a phenomenon. A 200-crore animated film in India is history in the making.
