Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has reportedly moved to the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) after facing a major payment issue with an edtech firm. The dispute involves an alleged ₹4.83 crore defaultlinked to an endorsement agreement.
According to reports, Akshay had partnered with Cue Learn Private Limited, the company behind the educational platform CueMath, for a brand endorsement deal. The actor is said to have fulfilled all his contractual commitments, including shoots and promotions, as required under the agreement.
However, while the company cleared the first instalment of ₹4.05 crore, the second payment, which was part of the agreed terms, allegedly never arrived.
NCLT Rejected Akshay’s Initial Plea
Akshay initially took the matter to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) under Section 9 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), seeking to recover the pending amount from the company.
But the Delhi bench of the NCLT dismissed the plea, stating that the case stemmed from a contractual dispute, not an operational or financial debt — and hence, didn’t fall under insolvency laws.
Akshay’s Appeal at NCLAT
Not satisfied with the NCLT’s ruling, Akshay’s legal team has now challenged the order at NCLAT, arguing that the payment was due irrespective of any scheduling or execution delays. They claim the tribunal overlooked key contractual clauses while passing its earlier order.
The matter is now pending before NCLAT, which will review submissions from both sides before making a final decision.
If proven, the case could mark one of the rare instances where a top Bollywood actor takes a legal route against a corporate client over a brand endorsement payment dispute
