Independence Day Box Office Clash War 2 Crashes Coolie Holds Average Mahavatar Narsimha Emerges As The Big Winner

The extended Independence Day weekend witnessed three major films battling for audience attention War 2 from the Spy Universe Rajinikanth starrer Coolie and the animated epic Mahavatar Narsimha. While expectations were sky high the weekend delivered mixed results across the board.

War 2 Struggles After Holiday Push

War 2 could not capitalize on the Independence Day frame. The film opened at 28 crore nett on Thursday and peaked at 45 crore on Friday thanks to the holiday boost. However Saturday and Sunday fell flat at 26 and 25.5 crore nett. Its four day weekend total stands approx 125 crore nett far below the standards of a big budget Spy Universe release.

With Monday opening at just 4% percent occupancy a double digit day looks impossible and even reaching 200 crore in Hindi markets now seems very tough. The film is already in crash mode with only a 1 weekend window to collect before facing Param Sundari.

Mahavatar Narsimha Powers Past 200 Crore Nationwide and Past 160 Crore in Hindi

In contrast Mahavatar Narsimha continues to be the story of the season. The film added a solid 19 crore nett in its fourth weekend despite War 2 arriving in theatres. Hindi collections stand at around 162 crore ntt. With excellent holds and strong support the film is on track to finish near 200 crore nett in Hindi. 

Remarkably this animated spectacle is performing better than many star driven blockbusters and is already five times higher than the previous biggest animated hit in India. Not surprising if Mahavatar Narsimha again shows strength in its fifth weekend too.

Coolie Shows Average Trend In Hindi Strong Down South

Coolie The Powerhouse collected approx 19 crore nett over its extended four day weekend in Hindi with numbers staying around the 4 crore mark. While its Hindi lifetime is heading towards 35 crore nett the film is faring much stronger in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana where the Rajinikanth/Lokesh Kanagaraj duo enjoys huge fan following. 

Coolie may not have shown extraordinary growth in Hindi but with pre release buzz the film has done slightly better than expected. Before Param Sundari arrives it has the chance to add some more numbers but trends suggest limited upside or flat. 

The Independence Day Weekend Verdict

The extended weekend belonged to Mahavatar Narsimha which maintained its dominance and crossed the 200 crore mark with ease. War 2 has turned into the biggest disappointment of the holiday frame crashing after the holiday sugar rush. Coolie managed average numbers in Hindi but remained strong in the South markets. With Monday already flat for both War 2 and Coolie the road ahead looks bumpy. While the animated giant may again shine in its 5th weekend. The only film defying gravity remains Mahavatar Narsimha which continues its historic march.
