Rajkumar Hirani Puts Sports Biopic with Ranbir Kapoor on Hold, Aamir Khan Big Biopic Takes Center Stage.
After the massive success of Sanju in 2018, fans were excited to see Rajkumar Hirani and Ranbir Kapoor team up once again. The duo had been developing a sports biopic that was expected to roll out soon. However, new updates suggest that the project has been delayed and may only take off in 2027.
Our Sources reveal that Hirani and his team felt the script needed more polishing before it could be taken to production. Both Hirani and Ranbir had spent months brainstorming, but with Ranbir’s diary packed for the next few years, filmmaker decided it was better to pause the project rather than rush into it. The idea is to revisit the film when the timing and creative vision align, just like they did with Sanju.
In the meantime, Hirani is now turning his focus to another passion project, a grand-scale biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, regarded as the father of Indian cinema. Aamir Khan has been roped in to play the legendary figure. Reports suggest that Aamir has already started early preparations, working on his look and planning workshops later this year. Shooting is likely to begin in early 2026. Interestingly, this will be Aamir Khan’s first time portraying a real-life personality on screen, and Hirani is said to be planning it as a big-budget, authentic period drama.
Ranbir Kapoor, on the other hand, continues to remain one of the busiest stars in Bollywood with an enviable lineup of films. He will next appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, followed by Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious Ramayana, where he plays Lord Ram. After these, the actor is likely to take on either Dhoom 4 or Animal Park, both among the most awaited big-ticket films currently in development.
With Hirani dedicating his next few years to Aamir Khan’s Phalke biopic and Ranbir caught up in multiple high-profile projects, their reunion may take longer than expected. But given their past record, fans believe whenever it happens, it will be worth the wait.
