War 2 Struggles at Box Office, Opening Weekend Ends on a Weak Note
After a strong Independence Day push, War 2 has failed to sustain momentum at the box office. Directed by Ayan Mukerji and headlined by Hrithik Roshan, NTR Jr. and Kiara Advani, the big-ticket action spectacle from YRF’s Spy Universe is now facing a tough road ahead.
The film had opened decently on Thursday with collections of around 28 crore, followed by a major boost on Independence Day when it jumped to 45 crore. However, that momentum was short lived. On Saturday, the film crashed to 26 crore and Sunday added just 25 crore, marking a worrying downward trend. The four day extended weekend now stands at about 124 crore net across India, which is far below expectations for a film mounted on such a massive scale.
Hindi version was expected to be the driving force, but even here the numbers have slowed down faster than anticipated. The dubbed South versions too have seen sharp falls after Day 1, contributing very little to the overall total. Trade experts fear that the film’s lifetime collections may struggle to even touch the 200 crore mark unless there is a miraculous turnaround in weekdays.
The bigger issue is audience feedback. Despite heavy star power and slick action sequences, reports from cinema halls suggest mixed to negative word of mouth. Many viewers found the story underwhelming and the pre release trailer and teaser had already lowered excitement levels. Unlike previous Spy Universe outings such as Tiger Zinda Hai or Pathaan, War 2 is not showing the repeat value pull that is crucial for blockbusters.
War 2 now risks being remembered as one of the weakest entries in YRF’s Spy Universe.
With the Independence Day advantage now gone and advance bookings for weekdays looking flat, War 2 faces an uphill battle. The coming days will be decisive in determining whether the film stabilises at lower levels or slips further into rejection.
CineInfinity will keep tracking the journey of War 2 as it unfolds at the box office.
