Coolie Review: Style, swagger and doses of entertainment
Rating: 3.5☆/5
Coolie feels like stepping into a world where mass entertainment meets pure fan service. Sometimes it soars, sometimes it stumbles, but it always keeps you looking at the screen. The moment Rajinikanth and Upendra share the frame in an action sequence, the film finds its heartbeat. There is a certain electricity when these two veterans throw punches and trade glances, the kind of screen presence that makes you lean forward instinctively.
Rajinikanth’s slow motion action blocks are a treat in themselves. Every swing, every walk, every look is drenched in style, almost like the film pauses just to let you enjoy The Rajini Effect. You can sense the director knows the audience is here for these moments and he serves them up generously.
The film also brings a realistic touch. There is no heavy VFX and the hand to hand fight scenes worked much more for me as an action film watching audience. You feel the impact of every punch and the weight of every movement which makes the action sequences hit harder.
There is Aamir Khan in a cameo as well but only to waste it completely. No memorable punch, no unexpected twist, nothing that makes you go “Yes, that’s why they brought him in.” It is one of those blink and forget appearances that leave you wondering why it was even there.
Amidst all the action one scene stands. In the middle of a tense fight, Shruti Haasan calls Rajinikanth, and asks for coolie number. Even with chaos all around, he takes the call and hears her voice. The brief exchange carries an emotional weight that cuts through the action, showing the human side of a man who is otherwise unshakable. That mix of intensity and tenderness makes the scene linger long after it ends.
Coolie is a full-on entertainer that truly delivers when it matters. It rides on Rajinikanth’s charisma, Upendra’s presence, and a few flashes of wild humor. If you go in expecting logic you might be disappointed. If you go in for the swagger, the slow motion, the realistic action and the occasional ridiculous laugh you will walk out smiling.
